What Are Eudicots? |
||
| To answer that question, we
need to define the term "dicot". When the seed of a
dicot plant germinates, it produces two initial, small leaves.
Those first leaves are called "cotyledons". The term
dicot is an abbreviation of the term "dicotyledon", meaning
"two leaves".
The term "eudicot" means "true dicot". That begs the question, what are the characteristics of true dicots? Dicots tend to have flower parts in 4's or 5's. Additionally, the leaf veins of dicots often exhibit branching of veins that resemble feathers, from the base of the leaf to the tip, or from a central axis, spreading outward toward the edges of the leaf. The dicots comprise an extremely large and diverse group of plants. Just a few examples of dicots include roses, dogwoods, asters and blueberries . Eudicots may include woody and herbaceous plant species. In this website, however, woody species are treated in separate search categories. |
