Perennial. Typical plant height is from 3 to 4 feet. Stems are solitary or clustered from a caudex; glabrous throughout.

Inflorescences are located primarily at tops of stems, often round-topped or flat-topped. Branches are typically numerous, relatively thin, ascending and often strongly recurved, or sometimes arching.

Flower heads are radiate, arranged one-sided on branches. Ray and disc floret corollas are bright yellow.

Some basal or lower stem leaves may be persistent at flowering. Stem leaves are oblanceolate, the largest toward stem base, and becoming smaller upwards. Stems, leaves and branches are essentially glabrous throughout, with at most a few scattered hairs on branches. This species is arguably our most glabrous goldenrod.
