Perennial.  Colony-forming from creeping rhizomes.  Stems are glabrous toward the base, but become short pubescent closer to the branches.  Typical height is 3 to 6 ft. (9 to 18 dm).

The overall inflorescence is ± compact, confined to the summit of the stem, often "pyramidal" in shape.  Branches are relatively short, crowded, spreading, and sometimes recurved.

Flower heads are radiate, arranged one-sided on branches.  Ray and disc floret corollas are yellow.  All florets are fertile.

Basal and lowermost stem leaves are usually withered by flowering.  Stem leaves are ovate-elliptic, glabrous, minutely toothed or entire, lacking petioles or borne on very short petioles.

Plants of fresh or salt-water swamps or damp thickets; distributed mostly in the coastal plain surrounding Long Island Sound or on Cape Cod.  Flowers early September to early October.  Native
