The Purvis Road Wetlands Natural Area is located in the town of Dryden, New York.  It is managed by the Cornell Botanic Gardens. The wide trail that passes through the wetlands area was originally a railroad track, constructed to be several feet higher than the surrounding ground.  Accordingly, the adjacent land is quite wet on both sides of the recreational pathway.  Small ponds and narrow streams scattered about the low ground support lush, diverse plant communities of wildflowers, grasses, sedges, vines and shrubs that are adapted to surviving in open, wet habitats. In these pages, you will find images of many of the common plant species that comprise this fascinating natural area.
