Six-Mile Creek is a waterway that stretches from Dryden, NY to the Cayuga Lake Inlet waterway in Ithaca. It is a primary source of water for the Town of Ithaca. Over the years, the lower portions of the creek (i.e., within the Town of Ithaca) have been substantially modified to prevent flooding of adjacent communities. These portions of the creek have been widened and dredged (periodically). Also, tall, concrete retaining walls have been constructed to prevent erosion of surrounding land. Pedestrian walkways have been created on both sides of the creek, along Titus Avenue, to afford closer viewing of scenic landscapes, to faciliate recreational fishing, and to provide a park-like place to walk dogs. There is a high diversity of plant species that grow within the creek and along its banks. Many of these species have been introduced by humans to enhance the scenic beauty of the creek. Many other species have migrated into the creek channel via water flows or by the wind. Click the link above to view a list of species that have been identified along the creek.
